City Park

Big upgrades are coming to City-Brooks Community Park! Major projects are improving the park’s lakes, making the park greener, and planning exciting new ways to play and explore.

BTR recreation is coming.

City Park, located between the Garden District neighborhood and LSU’s campus, offers diverse recreational options ranging from traditional amenities such golf, tennis, and fishing to a labyrinth dedicated to meditation and relaxation. The park is also home to the Knock Knock Children’s Museum – an attraction with hands-on activities aimed at empowering children to become readers, creative thinkers, and innovative problem solvers – as well as the Baton Rouge Gallery, a nonprofit contemporary art gallery that features local and national artists while hosting regular cultural programming open to the community.

The park is on the verge of significant further investment through the University Lakes Project, which will deepen the bodies of water while adding shoreline for recreation, and Envision Baton Rouge, which aims to reimagine the park in a way that rivals recreational assets in peer and aspirational cities.

Envision Baton Rouge

While City Park is currently an asset, fact-finding trips to peer cities have shown community leaders what is possible with nearly 155 acres in the heart of a city. Businesses, nonprofits, and governmental agencies are working together through a coalition called Envision Baton Rouge to add assets like a fishing pier, boat rentals, a concert venue, a botanical garden, and more.

Lake Revitalization

The park is also home to several lakes that are undergoing significant dredging and sustainability infrastructure work, future phases of which will improve landscaping and mobility around the lake. The project will double the size of the existing LSU Bird Sanctuary and create “living shorelines.” State and local stakeholders engaged in the work provide regular updates on their progress.
