Underpass Project

One of the most popular nightlife hubs in the region is undergoing major beautification and walkability upgrades.

Perkins Road Perks.

The Perkins Road Overpass area has been a hub for restaurant and bar patrons for decades. The corridor is lined with a mixture of Baton Rouge institutions that have been serving food and drinks for decades, as well as newer spots like Chow Yum, which was recently recognized for its “bold flavors” and vibrancy by Southern Living magazine. While the area is a major attraction for residents and visitors, the built environment could be improved for patrons – and efforts are underway to do just that.

The Underpass Project aims to transform the Perkins Road Overpass area into a multi-use space with significantly improved walkability, parking, and quality of place. While the Overpass area is one of the region’s denser mixed-use corridors with both retail and residential offerings, there are additional opportunities to turn it into a more vibrant community space by repairing and improving parking, creating community spaces for farmer’s markets and popups, and providing more enjoyable landscaping and lighting.

Retail, Restaurants & Bars

The Underpass Project will improve a neighborhood that’s home to Baton Rouge institutions like DiGiulio Brothers, Duvic’s, and Zippy’s Burritos. In recent years, new spots such as Overpass Merchant and The Colonel’s Club have become new favorites for residents of and visitors to the area. The area is also home to Varsity Sports, a locally owned fitness store that has doubled as a hub for the local running community since it opened in 2000.

Creating Great Places

The popularity of the Overpass area is currently popular despite its aesthetics and functionality rather than because of them. National survey data shows that adults – particularly young professionals – prefer spending time in walkable neighborhoods in a well-built environment. The Underpass Project will create pathways, lighting, and landscaping that will ensure the space between all these amenities is as great as the beloved businesses themselves.
