Baton Rouge has so much growth potential, a strong community and culture, and the comfort of home.
What makes the Baton Rouge Area a better way to live?
I'm a Baton Rouge native, born and raised, and a Southern University A&M Graduate. Although, I've lived other places, like San Franscisco, Denver, and Houston, Baton Rouge has always been home. When I finished my Master's Degree at Texas A&M University, I wanted to make an impact in the community that cultivated me into the woman I am today. Baton Rouge has so much growth potential, a strong community and culture, and the comfort of home. Sometimes other cities feel like a fast-paced and socially distance life compared to living in Baton Rouge. Baton Rouge is such a close knit community, where social circles are smaller and easier to connect with your peers.
Which communities are you a part of in the Capital Region?
I have quite a few different communities that I am part of in Baton Rouge. I became a proud member of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. while attending Southern University! Nothing like being a Jaguar and a pretty girl! I've been a member of the local YMCA for years where I take a weekly Step & Tone Class to stay in shape. Along with my fitness routine, I love attending the Redstick Farmer's Market to patronize our local farmers and businesses. My passion for fashion has lead me to meet and network with all kinds of entreprenurs from local social media influencers to local boutique owners!
I usually find my tribe by attending local events, with the help of our local 225 Magazine and following the IG of some key BR influencers like Maameefua Koomson, WhereToGeaux225, and Baton Rouge Updates! These sources keep me plugged into what is going on in our great city!
I've always had a sense of belonging here. My parents, both Southern University Jaguars, have invested in Baton Rouge as well. My mother, a teacher in EBR School Systems and my father, a retired Baton Rouge City Police Captain. I have so many memories of going to the Goodwood (Main) Library as a child with my mother and attending LSU and Southern home games as my dad worked game day. Baton Rouge is my home.
How is it building a career in the Baton Rouge Area?
Building a career can be a be challenging, but finding your people is the key. You have to start by putting yourself out there and the right doors will open. Since starting my styling business, I've met so many entrepenurs and creatives in Baton Rouge. You never know who you'll met, so getting out of your comfort zone is so important. Being here in Baton Rouge is right for me because making an impact at home gives me the confidence to make it anywhere! Having the support of my husband, family, and friends has to be the best feeling ever. I know I can achieve anything with them rooting for me!
The most unique thing about community here is that strangers can become friends and friends can become family. We have such a friendly and warm culture, most times when you are looking for help, you'll find it.
What is your ideal weekend in the Baton Rouge Area?
My favorite types of activities usually involve music, food, and shopping! Of course, shopping is one of my favorites because I'm always looking for something unique and different. We have so many local boutiques that I love to pop in and see what's new! Now, I love just about every season in Baton Rouge, but especially crawfish season and Live After Five Downtown! Nothing like eating crawfish, listening to Michael Foster Project or a Zydeco Band play downtown on a Friday evening after a long week of work! My ideal weekend would be going to the Farmer's Market, working out at the YMCA, and going downtown for cocktails with my husband at one of our favorite spots like The Vintage or River Room.
