A Runner's Weekend Race Guide in BTR

Neighborhood jogs and long-distance runs are better in BTR.

I love living and running in Baton Rouge because there are so many things to do and new runs to discover.

Some of my favorite routes are running the levee trail from LSU to downtown, the loop around the lakes, or a neighborhood jog through Capital Heights, Southdowns or Goodwood.

Friday – Race Day Prep

I cannot recommend a Restore class at Trifecta Sports Therapy fast enough. Ana is a saint in her field and her class is filled with low impact and high relaxation techniques. Other recovery options like a cold plunge and normatec are readily available for anyone too! After class, I enjoy a local cup of coffee from French Truck Coffee on Government Street. It’s dog-friendly, so I usually turn the coffee stop into a dog walk as well.

If you prefer a brewery visit, Baton Rouge has great local brew scene including but not limited to Rally Cap, Agile, Istrouma and Gilla. The majority of my meals are home-cooked these days, but before a race, I love a carb and protein packed meal. My favorite? Chicken fajitas! Then I head home and make sure everything is set for race/running day.

Saturday – Race Day

Start off race day with a light breakfast and drinking plenty of water. Head out to the race start early, get some stretching in and meet up with running buddies!

A lot of runners head to O’Hara's after a run to grab a drink. I like to walk around and keep moving. You can usually find me slinging bananas or cheering on other runners near the finish line. As for the rest of the day, I like to take it easy. Usually grab a turkey sandwich from Maxwell’s Market (their honey mustard is the BEST) and grab a sweet treat to savor over the weekend from CounterSpace MidCity (they also have coffee and a great breakfast menu!) Unwind walking around Perkins Rowe later that evening for light drinks at Bin 77. Other great local spots are Hayride Scandal for whiskey and craft cocktail lovers and The Bulldog if you have a pup you want to take out!

Sunday – Recovery Day

One of my favorite brunch spots in Baton Rouge is Superior Grill, they’re frozen mimosas are unmatched. You can have almost anything there from a simple egg breakfast to frittatas and breakfast tacos. Another local favorite is Mason’s Grill, they have one of the best bottomless mimosa deals in town. I like to stay loose the day after a long run or a race, so I usually head out to one of my favorite neighborhoods to walk a bit and explore a new spot around town.

Some bonus pampering for Sunday, everyone loves a good ‘treat yo self’ day! Highly recommend heading to Paris Parker Aveda for some pampering, and if you stick around town Monday, make sure you go back to Trifecta Sports Therapy for some recovery services like a cold plunge or normatec session!
